Guadalupe Cerna, Medical Assistant (MA) program
Guadalupe Cerna is a student in ICH’s Medical Assistant (MA) program. Guadalupe is a dedicated and hard-working student, determined to make her goals a reality. With a mission to make Medical Assisting her career, Guadalupe is not going to let anything stand in her way. Her mantra: “I’ll make it to the moon if I have to crawl.”
Guadalupe was chosen for the featured student spotlight by her instructor Teri Weller, ICH’s MA Program Director and lead MA instructor. Weller chose Guadalupe for the Featured Student Spotlight because Guadalupe has demonstrated such dedication to her studies. Weller also appreciates Guadalupe’s willingness to help others, saying, “She is here rain or shine; her grades are high 90’s, always helping her peers.”
In ICH’s Medical Assistant program, students like Guadalupe learn to perform the essential skills needed for entry-level employment, including phlebotomy, measuring a patient’s vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration, setting up and assisting the physician with minor office surgeries, gynecological exams, and other diagnostic procedures. Because the medical assistant role often encompasses clerical tasks as well, ICH’s MA program also teaches students to handle administrative duties including front office management, appointment scheduling, verifying patient information and health insurance, updating and filing patients’ medical records and insurance paperwork.
Students in ICH’s MA program benefit from practicing the skills they learn in a real-world setting. Using a simulated exam room and reception desk, students can check in patients using a common Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, escort patients to the exam room, and perform diagnostic testing in preparation for the doctor’s examination. To provide students with the real-world training they need, each MA student is placed in an externship, empowering them to demonstrate what they have learned and their potential for employment. Through hands-on, supervised practice, MA students are prepared to transition seamlessly into their future positions.
After completing their program, ICH graduates enter the job market with confidence, thanks to the support of ICH’s Career Services department.
